Abuja, Nigeria — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that 97 per cent of ambassadors appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have been accepted by their respective host countries, signalling strong progress in Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements.
In a press release issued on Saturday, signed by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.the Ministry disclosed that out of the 69 ambassadors-designate assigned to various countries following Senate confirmation, 65 have successfully received agrément, the formal consent required from host nations before envoys can assume duty.
The Ministry described the process of seeking and obtaining agrément as smooth and consistent with established international diplomatic procedures.
It, however, clarified that the ambassadorial nominee to the Republic of Togo declined the appointment, resulting in no request for agrément being submitted, while the nominee to Algeria passed away in April 2026, with steps already underway to appoint a replacement.
According to the Ministry, only two countries are yet to confirm acceptance of Nigeria’s ambassadors, although assurances have been received that approvals will be granted in due course.
“The Ministry is actively engaging the relevant authorities in the two countries and is confident that the outstanding agreements will be conveyed soon,” the statement said.

It further noted that most of the confirmed ambassadors have already arrived in their host countries and presented their Letters of Credence, officially commencing their roles as Nigeria’s principal envoys.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic presence globally, in line with the country’s foreign policy objectives and national interest.
