Ahead of Nigerian’s 2027 generations elections, the Centre for Media and Society (CEMESO), in collaboration with the European Union (EU) and other stakeholders, says implementation of measures to combat artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled disinformation and electoral manipulation ahead of the 2027 general elections will begin immediately.
The Executive Director of CEMESO, Dr. Akin Akingbulu, disclosed this to Newsmen at the end of the two-day National Summit on Electoral Information Integrity, themed “Beyond the Ballot: AI, FIMI and the Integrity of Nigeria’s 2027 Elections.”
Akingbulu said the organisation would coordinate a multi-stakeholder implementation process involving government institutions, civil society organisations, media organisations and other relevant partners to address emerging threats to electoral information integrity.
He explained that tackling AI-driven disinformation required collective action, stressing that no single institution could independently address the threats posed by emerging technologies during the electoral process.
According to him, CEMESO and the International Press Centre (IPC), working with the EU and other stakeholders, would coordinate the process to ensure a decisive and comprehensive response to AI-enabled disinformation ahead of the elections.
He disclosed that participants at the summit had developed a Statement of Commitment outlining specific actions and responsibilities assigned to various stakeholder institutions as part of preparations for the 2027 elections.
Akingbulu assured that implementation would not be delayed by government bureaucracy, noting that several of the participating institutions were non-governmental organisations.
He added that government agencies involved in the process were expected to work within the implementation timeline agreed upon at the summit.
The CEMESO director said activities would commence in the coming days, with government institutions and other stakeholders expected to participate.
He expressed satisfaction with the summit’s outcome, describing the turnout, quality of presentations and level of stakeholder engagement as impressive.

According to him, the summit was not merely a talk shop, as participants’ recommendations, findings and proposed solutions had been documented in various outcome documents to guide implementation.
He expressed optimism that the commitments would translate into concrete actions, improve electoral information integrity and contribute to credible elections in 2027.
