The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has taken environmental education beyond the classroom, exposing 90 secondary school students to practical waste management operations and the role of technology in promoting sustainability.
The students, drawn from Durable Comprehensive High School, participated in an educational visit to LAWMA facilities on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, as part of activities marking World Science Day.
In a statement issued on Friday, November 6, 2026, LAWMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Mukaila Sanusi, PhD, said the authority’s Executive Director, Mr. Kunle Adebiyi, explained that the visit was designed to help students understand how science, technology and innovation could be applied to address environmental challenges and improve waste management practices.
He said the programme also educated the students on waste reduction, sorting, reuse, recycling and upcycling, stressing the need to maximise the recovery and reuse of discarded materials.
According to him, the agency’s Street Sanitation Department introduced the students to the routes and operational procedures involved in maintaining clean public spaces.
The Engineering Services Department also demonstrated the operations of waste management equipment, including trucks and compactors, explaining their roles in waste collection and transportation.

Adebiyi said the practical exposure enabled the students to connect classroom lessons with real-life environmental management activities while deepening their understanding of responsible waste disposal and environmental protection.
He added that the initiative reflected LAWMA’s commitment to nurturing environmentally conscious young people capable of promoting sustainable waste management practices in their homes, schools and communities.
