LONDON — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for deeper strategic partnership between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, particularly in addressing regional security challenges and strengthening economic cooperation, during a historic state banquet at Windsor Castle.
Speaking in honour of his state visit hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla, Tinubu emphasised the urgency of enhanced bilateral collaboration to tackle terrorism in West Africa, noting Nigeria’s frontline role in stabilising the Sahel region.
“Our West African region faces complex terrorism challenges with roots in the Sahel. Nigeria carries an enormous responsibility to help safeguard regional stability. In confronting these threats, partnership with the United Kingdom remains essential,” the President said, ahead of a scheduled meeting with Keir Starmer.
The President’s address, delivered before members of the British Royal Family including Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, underscored a renewed push to align both nations on shared security, democratic values, and economic growth.
Tinubu described his speech as a historic milestone, becoming the first Nigerian leader to address a state banquet at Windsor Castle, a symbol of British heritage and governance spanning nearly a millennium.
Highlighting long-standing institutional ties, he traced Nigeria’s democratic and legal foundations to British influences such as the Magna Carta and the evolution of parliamentary democracy. He also acknowledged the enduring cultural and intellectual contributions of British thinkers like John Locke and literary figures including William Shakespeare.
Beyond history, Tinubu spotlighted the role of Nigerians in the UK, particularly in critical sectors such as healthcare, noting that Nigerian professionals form a significant part of the workforce in the National Health Service.
He also cited prominent athletes of Nigerian descent, including Bukayo Saka and Anthony Joshua, as symbols of the strong human and cultural ties binding both nations.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to the Commonwealth of Nations, Tinubu pledged continued engagement in advancing shared global goals under the bloc.

Tinubu concluded by expressing optimism about the future of Nigeria–UK relations, calling for sustained collaboration built on “mutual respect, shared values, and a common vision for progress.”
