Lagos, Nigeria — The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed the successful containment of a fire outbreak at a two-storey building in Ojuelegba, Surulere area of Lagos, with no casualties recorded.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday at No. 2, Makinde Street, was reportedly caused by a power surge, according to preliminary investigations.
Head of Public Affairs at LASEMA, Mr. Olawale Afolabi, said the agency’s Cobra response team arrived promptly at the scene to find the building engulfed in flames.
Afolabi noted that a coordinated, multi-agency response was immediately activated to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures.
Agencies involved in the operation included the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Fire Service, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and the Nigeria Police Force.
“The fire has been successfully subdued, and dampening down operations are ongoing to prevent any possible reignition,” Afolabi said.
He added that the absence of casualties underscored the effectiveness of Lagos State’s emergency response system and the professionalism of the responders.
The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, commended the swift collaboration among agencies, describing it as critical to averting a potential disaster in the densely populated area.
He also urged residents to adopt preventive safety measures, especially against electrical fires. These include unplugging appliances when not in use, employing qualified electricians for wiring, and installing circuit breakers.

Residents were further advised to report emergencies promptly via the state’s toll-free lines, 767 and 112.
LASEMA assured the public that the situation has been brought under control, with no further threat to lives or property in the area.
