The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has stepped up efforts to improve waste evacuation across the state, assuring residents that comprehensive measures are underway to enhance service delivery and environmental sanitation.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed this while addressing ongoing operational interventions. He acknowledged existing challenges affecting waste evacuation in some areas but emphasised that immediate, medium-term, and long-term solutions were being actively implemented.
According to a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Mukaila Sanusi, the current operational pressures were partly due to limited access to disposal facilities, especially during the peak of the rainy season.
Gbadegesin revealed that LAWMA’s waste-to-wealth partner, ZoomLion Nigeria Limited, had commenced preliminary works to stabilise and reopen Road E at the Olusosun disposal facility. He described the intervention as critical to improving access, reducing turnaround time, and boosting operational efficiency.
As part of interim measures, the agency has resuscitated and optimised Transfer Loading Stations (TLSs) across the state to accelerate waste evacuation from communities while infrastructure upgrades continue.
The LAWMA boss further disclosed that the state government was supporting Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators in acquiring additional waste collection vehicles. He noted that 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) compactor trucks would soon be deployed to significantly boost capacity, while 10 trucks donated by the Lagos State Lottery and Gaming Board were already in operation.
To curb indiscriminate waste disposal, Gbadegesin said enforcement had been intensified, alongside the establishment of a Waste Police initiative involving transport unions and community stakeholders to promote environmental compliance.
He added that the government was also exploring inter-state collaboration to expand disposal options and improve operational flexibility.
Providing insight into recent operations, Gbadegesin said LAWMA facilities received over 418,500 tonnes of waste in May 2026 despite prevailing challenges. He added that about 3,000 blackspots were being cleared daily through ongoing sanitation efforts.
The agency is also constructing new Transfer Loading Stations at Olusosun and Solous III, which are expected to divert up to 4,000 tonnes of waste daily to recycling and treatment facilities upon completion. This, he noted, would reduce pressure on dumpsites and advance Lagos’ circular economy objectives.

Gbadegesin urged residents to patronise only approved PSP operators, avoid illegal dumping, and support government initiatives aimed at maintaining a cleaner environment.
He reassured Lagosians that current challenges were being addressed and that service delivery would progressively improve as the various interventions take effect, reaffirming LAWMA’s commitment to efficient and sustainable waste management.
