The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), , has lauded Nigerian sprint sensation and British-Nigerian basketball star for their outstanding performances on the global sporting stage, describing them as shining examples of Nigerian excellence and resilience.
In a congratulatory message, Dabiri-Erewa commended Ajayi for his remarkable rise in world athletics, noting that his achievements have rekindled national pride and renewed optimism for Nigerian track and field.
She highlighted Ajayi’s historic qualification for the 100 metres final at the 2025 World Athletics Championships, making him the first Nigerian in 18 years to reach the final of the event.
The NiDCOM boss further praised the young athlete from Ikorodu, Lagos State, for his exceptional 2026 season, which has seen him emerge as one of the fastest sprinters globally.
Ajayi began the season by winning the 60 metres title at the SEC Indoor Championships with a national record time of 6.45 seconds, equalling both African and NCAA collegiate records, before repeating the feat to clinch the NCAA Indoor Championship.
He went on to break the long-standing Nigerian 100 metres record previously held by Olusoji Fasuba, clocking a world-leading 9.84 seconds to become the fastest man in the world this season.
In another milestone, Ajayi secured the 100 metres title at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a wind-assisted 9.72 seconds, the fastest all-conditions time ever recorded by an African athlete.
According to Dabiri-Erewa, the sprinter’s accomplishments underscore Nigeria’s capacity to produce world-class athletes capable of excelling at the highest levels.
“His success story highlights the importance of investing in youth development, sports, and talent discovery. We are proud of his achievements and confident he will continue to make Nigeria proud,” she said.
She urged corporate organisations and relevant stakeholders to support outstanding Nigerians who distinguish themselves internationally, noting that such achievements enhance the country’s global image.
In the same vein, Dabiri-Erewa applauded Anunoby for his decisive contribution to the New York Knicks’ dramatic Game 4 victory in the NBA Finals.
The British-Nigerian forward delivered a defining moment when he tipped in a shot attempt by Jalen Brunson with just 1.2 seconds remaining, sealing a remarkable comeback from a 29-point deficit and igniting celebrations at Madison Square Garden.
Describing the feat as inspiring, Dabiri-Erewa said Anunoby’s performance reflects the resilience, determination, and excellence associated with Nigerians in the diaspora.
“On behalf of NiDCOM and Nigerians at home and abroad, I congratulate OG Anunoby on this historic accomplishment. His performance on one of basketball’s biggest stages reflects the immense potential of Nigerians globally,” she stated.
She noted that the achievement has resonated beyond the United States, inspiring young basketball enthusiasts across Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and beyond.
Speaking after the match, Anunoby described the moment as significant for basketball in the United Kingdom, noting that it marked one of the biggest moments in the sport’s history in the country.
