Lagos, Oct. 7, 2025 — Lagos City Senior College, Yaba, representing Education District IV, has emerged as the state-level champion of the 10th National Quiz Competition on Legislature, Democracy, and Governance, organised by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS).
The keenly contested event, held at the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Akoka, featured top-performing schools from the state’s six education districts. Students were tested on subjects including democracy, civic responsibility, governance, and legislative knowledge.
Lagos City Senior College clinched first place with 50 points, followed by Oriwu Senior Model College, Ikorodu (District II) with 45 points, and State Senior High School, Ibereko (District V) in third place with 30 points.
Their victory qualifies Lagos City Senior College to represent Lagos State at the South-West Zonal Finals scheduled for October 30 in Akure, Ondo State.
Delivering his remarks, Prof. Abubakar Olanrewaju, former Minister of National Planning and Director-General of NILDS, commended the students for their impressive performance, describing it as evidence of the institute’s goal to promote legislative and democratic literacy among young Nigerians.
Olanrewaju, represented by Mrs. Abisola Ojogiwa, NILDS Chief Accounts Officer, said the annual competition was designed to expand civic education and deepen students’ understanding of legislative processes and governance.
“NILDS launched the National Quiz Competition on Legislature and Democracy in 2016, initially for schools in the FCT. Following its expansion nationwide in 2022, it has become a key annual platform fostering civic awareness and democratic values among young Nigerians,” he said.
He noted that the 2025 edition marks the 10th overall and the fourth since the competition attained national status, reaffirming NILDS’ commitment to nurturing a new generation of civic-conscious students.
Ojogiwa urged the students to pursue greater civic engagement, noting that the initiative aimed to inspire youths to participate actively in governance and nation-building.
“We want young people to be aware of political developments and to understand that democracy thrives when citizens are informed and involved,” she added.
In his goodwill message, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, lauded NILDS for sustaining the programme, describing it as “inspiring and laudable.” He said the competition motivates students to learn more about governance and democratic practices.
Mr. Jubril Ahmed, a teacher from Lagos City Senior College, expressed pride in his students’ performance, attributing their success to hard work, discipline, and teamwork.
“This victory is a call for greater commitment. We’ll continue to prepare intensively for the zonal contest. Beyond the scores, the competition has expanded their understanding of legislative governance and civic responsibility,” he said.

Certificates of participation were presented to all competing schools, while winners of bonus rounds received notebooks and other educational materials.
Participating schools included Lagos City Senior College, Yaba; Oriwu Senior Model College, Ikorodu; Vetland Senior Grammar School, Agege; Dolphin Senior High School, Ikoyi; Estate Senior Grammar School, Ilupeju; and State Senior High School, Ibereko.
