Abuja — The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Philip Shaibu, has called for stronger national commitment to public health, commending the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT, for spearheading a timely awareness campaign.
Shaibu made the call while chairing the 2026 Public Health Awareness and Wellbeing Conference held at the NUJ FCT Council Secretariat in Utako, Abuja. The event was organised by the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel in collaboration with Alliance Hospital and Dr. Physiq Global Health & Wellness Centre.
Describing the initiative as both necessary and impactful, Shaibu stressed the urgency of prioritising health amid prevailing national challenges. He urged Nigerians to adopt regular medical check-ups, noting that mental stability and physical wellbeing are essential for daily productivity.
“Our health is critical, owing to the situation we find ourselves in today. Whether you like it or not, health is wealth,” he said.
Speaking on the conference theme, which focused on product integrity, regulatory compliance and safety standards, Shaibu underscored the need to strengthen trust in healthcare systems and ensure patient safety through strict adherence to standards.
He further called for sustained collaboration among stakeholders, urging professional bodies, including the Nigerian Medical Association, to emulate the initiative and actively support public health campaigns.
Highlighting reforms at the NIS, Shaibu disclosed the introduction of routine fitness programmes, with staff dedicating time weekly to exercise as part of efforts to promote healthy living. He also revealed that the institute recently secured a certified medical doctor specialising in marathon events, describing it as a major milestone achieved without waiting for budgetary releases.
Shaibu emphasised the need for proactive leadership, cautioning public officials against overreliance on government funding. According to him, innovative thinking and decisive action are critical to driving meaningful change.
Reflecting on his appointment, he expressed appreciation to Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as foresight in leadership selection, while reaffirming his commitment to advancing sports development and Nigeria’s participation in international competitions.
The former Deputy Governor of Edo State also paid tribute to journalists, describing them as the backbone of democracy. He recounted how media intervention during Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle contributed to securing his freedom from detention, underscoring the critical role of the press in safeguarding lives and democratic values.

The conference featured a keynote address by Abdulrahaman M. Huzaifa, while Christopher Otabor delivered a guest lecture. It was hosted by Felix Ojo, with Grace Ike serving as Chief Host.
Participants also benefited from free medical diagnostic services provided at the event, reinforcing its focus on preventive healthcare and improved public wellbeing.
