The House of Representatives has announced a forthcoming public hearing on a proposed bill entitled “A Bill to Regulate Corporate Social Responsibility and Related Matters” (HB. 243), sponsored by Rep. Olumide Osoba (APC, Ogun).
The oversight of this public engagement will be overseen by Rep. Lilian Orogbu (LP, Anambra), Chairperson of the House Committee on Corporate Social Responsibility, and inaugurated by Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The public hearing is set to take place with the following details:

Time: 10:00 a.m.
Venue: House of Representatives’ New Building, Conference Room 236, National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

Commenting on the significance of this legislation, the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Olumide Osoba, conveyed: “This bill represents a crucial stride towards ensuring that businesses in Nigeria are held responsible for their social and environmental impacts. It strives to endorse ethical business conduct and prompt companies to make positive contributions to the communities in which they operate.”
Rep. Orogbu also stressed the importance of this public hearing, remarking, “This bill signifies a pivotal move towards guaranteeing that businesses in Nigeria are not solely profitable but also make constructive contributions to the communities in which they function. It is imperative that we regulate corporate social responsibility endeavors to advance sustainable development and ethical business practices.”
The bill aims to institute a regulatory framework for corporate social responsibility activities in Nigeria, ensuring that businesses function in a manner that not only supports societal welfare but also nurtures sustainability and accountability in their operations.
