The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, has described the newly launched memoir, Fragments of Time: My Foreign Service Years, as a vital contribution to Nigeria’s diplomatic history and a guide for future generations of foreign service officers.
Ahmed made the remarks at the official unveiling of the book authored by Ambassador Eineje Onobu, held at the Rotunda of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja on Tuesday.
He said the publication goes beyond a personal account, noting that it captures decades of dedicated service, intellectual depth, and commitment to advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives.
According to him, the memoir provides valuable insights into the complexities of diplomacy and the evolving nature of international relations, while highlighting Nigeria’s strategic role on the global stage.
“This work serves as both a historical record and a guide for officers within the Ministry. It reminds us of the sacrifices required in representing our country and challenges younger diplomats to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, patriotism, and integrity,” Ahmed stated.
The Permanent Secretary further noted that the book contributes significantly to national memory and academic scholarship, offering lessons not only for diplomats but also for policymakers, scholars, and the general public.
He emphasised that the reflections contained in the memoir come at a critical period marked by geopolitical shifts, economic uncertainties, and emerging global challenges, underscoring the continued relevance of diplomacy in navigating international complexities.
Ahmed commended Onobu for documenting his experiences, expressing confidence that the publication would inspire future diplomats and serve as a valuable reference in the years ahead.

The event drew members of the diplomatic corps, government officials, and other distinguished guests who gathered to celebrate the veteran diplomat’s enduring contributions to Nigeria’s foreign service.
