The Chairman of Badagry West Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Mr Rauf Yemaren, says his administration has graded and sand-filled 60 inner roads across the council’s five wards within its first year in office.
Yemaren disclosed this on Friday during a breakfast meeting with journalists, themed “Presenting Our Journey So Far”, at the council’s secretariat.
He also announced the appointment of 300 senior and junior special assistants, saying the move was aimed at strengthening grassroots participation, improving communication and ensuring that residents’ concerns were adequately represented in governance.
The chairman, however, charged the appointees to demonstrate discipline, accountability and commitment to public service, stressing that their positions should translate into tangible benefits for their communities.
“These positions come with responsibilities. They are not merely titles for personal recognition. Every appointee must understand the importance of discipline, loyalty, accountability, accessibility and service to the people,” he said.
On infrastructure, Yemaren said the grading and sand-filling of 60 inner roads were intended to improve accessibility, ease transportation and support commercial and social activities across the five wards.
He said his administration had also prioritised education through the renovation of Methodist Primary School, Sawa, including the painting of its perimeter artistic fence.
According to him, the construction of a modern Computer-Based Test (CBT) centre at Ganyingbo Topa is almost completed, with a capacity to accommodate 504 candidates.
He added that educational materials, including exercise books, school bags and uniforms, had been distributed across the council’s eight public primary schools.
On economic empowerment, Yemaren said his administration had distributed equipment such as motorcycles, grinding machines, deep freezers, sewing machines, plumbing tools and cobbler equipment to support residents in various vocational and business activities.
He further disclosed that 100 women had benefited from a foodstuff business empowerment programme valued at N100 million.
The chairman said the council had also sustained monthly cash assistance and special welfare interventions for persons with disabilities as part of efforts to promote inclusive governance.
In the health sector, he said the administration had supported medical equipment interventions, vaccination exercises, polio eradication campaigns and medical outreach programmes to improve access to basic healthcare services.
Yemaren also said more than 2,000 sanitary pads and other support materials had been distributed to teenage girls in collaboration with the Department of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation to promote menstrual hygiene.
He added that the council had supported campaigns against sexual and domestic violence, encouraging residents to report abuses and protect the rights of women and children.

The chairman acknowledged that several projects were still awaiting completion, but assured residents that his administration remained committed to delivering on its promises of renewed hope, action and accountability.
He said the council would continue to collaborate with traditional institutions, political leaders, community stakeholders, the media and residents to advance development across Badagry West.
