Awka — Organisers of a planned protest against poor electricity supply in Anambra State have suspended the demonstration earlier scheduled for March 14, citing mounting pressure and security threats.
The Coordinator of the Electricity Consumers Rights Network in Anambra, Mr. Osita Obi, announced the suspension on Friday during a news conference in Awka.
Obi said the decision was taken after consultations with security agencies and the Anambra State Government, which raised concerns over the potential security implications of the protest.
He explained that the organising team faced significant pressure, including threats, which forced them to reconsider proceeding with the demonstration.
“The protest against the poor electricity supply in Anambra planned for March 14 in Awka will no longer be held as scheduled,” Obi said.
“This decision is in response to the concerns raised by relevant authorities. We have decided to shelve the protest for now,” he added.
Obi disclosed that the organisers held a series of meetings with representatives of the Anambra State Government, the Police Command, and the Department of State Services (DSS), all of whom advised against the protest on security grounds.
According to him, the level of intimidation directed at the organisers was alarming, noting that he personally received at least 157 phone calls, some of which contained threats.
“I was even told that I would be responsible for whatever happens if anything goes wrong during the protest,” he said.

Obi, however, expressed regret over the suspension of the protest but urged electricity consumers across the state not to relent in demanding improved service delivery from power providers.
He also encouraged residents to participate actively in a town hall meeting organised by FirstPower Electricity Distribution Company scheduled for March 18, describing it as another opportunity for consumers to voice their grievances and demand better electricity supply.
