Navy Urges Removal of Nigeria’s ‘High-Risk’ Maritime Label, Cites Three Years of Piracy-Free Waters
The Nigerian Navy has called for the removal of Nigeria from the global list of high-risk maritime nations, insisting that the classification is unjustified given the country’s recent record of maritime safety.
Speaking at the 3rd Annual Maritime Lecture of the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN) in Lagos, Rear Admiral Michael Gregory Oamen, Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, said Nigeria’s territorial waters have been free of piracy incidents for over three years, a feat achieved through heavy investments in maritime security infrastructure and international collaborations.
He described the continued classification as a “misrepresentation” that hampers trade and places unnecessary financial burdens on shipowners through excessive war risk insurance premiums.

The MARAN President, Godfrey Bivbere, echoed this call, stating that the association intends to use the platform to pressure the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and major insurance companies to review Nigeria’s maritime status.
Stakeholders at the lecture, which brought together key players in the maritime industry, reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening security and fostering partnerships to drive Nigeria’s economic development.
