The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of a 21-year-old Nigerian student, Qayyum Balogun, in Dublin, Ireland, describing the incident as heartbreaking and a significant loss to both his family and the nation.
Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in a statement on Wednesday, extended her condolences to the bereaved family, noting that the untimely death of the young student has plunged the Nigerian community at home and abroad into grief.
Dabiri-Erewa described Balogun as a bright and promising young man whose life was cut short in his prime. She noted that the deceased, a third-year Computer Science student at Maynooth University, was widely regarded as peaceful, disciplined, and hardworking, with aspirations of becoming a computer engineer.
“This is not only a devastating loss to his immediate family but also to Nigeria, which takes pride in the achievements of its young citizens across the globe,” she said.
The NiDCOM boss stressed that every Nigerian, regardless of location, deserves to live, study, and pursue their ambitions in a safe and dignified environment.
She expressed confidence in the ongoing investigation by Irish authorities, urging that it be thorough, transparent, and expedited to ensure justice is served and all responsible parties are held accountable.
Dabiri-Erewa also commended the Nigerian Embassy in Ireland, members of the Nigerian community, and various individuals and organisations for their support to the Balogun family during the difficult period.
She prayed for strength and comfort for the grieving family, as well as for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul.

Reaffirming NiDCOM’s commitment to Nigerians in the diaspora, Dabiri-Erewa encouraged citizens abroad to remain law-abiding and continue to uphold the values of excellence, resilience, and patriotism.
