The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has activated its National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) to enhance coordination and response to the 2026 flood situation across Nigeria.
The Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, announced the activation during the inauguration of NEOC members at the Agency’s headquarters in Abuja on August 4, 2026. She said the move is aimed at improving the collation, processing, and dissemination of reliable data and information to strengthen preparedness, planning, and response efforts nationwide.
Umar charged members of the Centre to demonstrate diligence, professionalism, and proactiveness in carrying out their responsibilities, stressing the critical role of accurate and timely information in disaster management.
She emphasized that information generated from the Centre must be factual, reliable, and promptly disseminated to support effective decision-making and efficient management of flooding and other climate-induced disasters.
According to her, the activation of the NEOC is part of NEMA’s proactive measures to boost national preparedness and ensure seamless coordination among stakeholders during the 2026 rainy season.
She noted that timely access to credible information remains vital for early warning, swift deployment of resources, and the protection of lives and livelihoods in flood-prone communities.
Also speaking, the Deputy Director of Planning, Research and Forecasting, Mr. Tony Ephraim, assured the Director General of the Centre’s commitment to effective monitoring, data collection, analysis, and information management.

He said the team would work assiduously to support timely decision-making and coordinated response to flood emergencies and other climate-related hazards.
The NEOC is expected to serve as a central hub for monitoring flood developments, harmonising data from relevant agencies, and strengthening collaboration among stakeholders to ensure effective preparedness and response throughout the rainy season.
