The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified its environmental compliance enforcement in Oshodi Market, issuing Intention to Seal Notices to traders and business premises found violating sanitation laws.
The enforcement action, carried out on Monday by LAWMA’s Project WISE team, followed a monitoring exercise that revealed persistent indiscriminate waste disposal, poor sanitation practices, and non-compliance with approved waste management regulations across sections of the market.
Speaking on the development, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the exercise was part of the agency’s sustained efforts to enforce environmental standards in major commercial hubs across Lagos.
He explained that the affected traders were served notices after repeated advocacy campaigns, compliance engagements, and monitoring failed to yield satisfactory adherence to environmental laws.
According to him, the notices offer a final opportunity for defaulters to take corrective action before stricter enforcement measures, including sealing of premises, are implemented.
“The Intention to Seal Notices provide the affected traders and business operators with another opportunity to comply with prescribed sanitation requirements,” Gbadegesin said.
He warned that indiscriminate waste disposal and poor sanitation practices pose serious risks to public health, environmental sustainability, and the overall aesthetics of the city.

The LAWMA boss urged market leaders, traders, and business owners to maintain clean surroundings, patronise only assigned Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators, and ensure proper waste disposal through approved channels.
He reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to combining public enlightenment with firm enforcement to drive responsible environmental behaviour and support the Lagos State Government’s vision of a cleaner and healthier city.
