Deputy Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has commended the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) for adopting Nigeria’s landmark resolution on the role of parliaments in restoring lasting peace worldwide.
The resolution, presented by Kalu at the 152nd IPU Assembly held in Istanbul, Turkey, underwent intense deliberations over two days before receiving approval from member states.
Titled “The Role of Parliaments in Establishing Robust Post-Conflict Management Mechanisms and Restoring a Just and Lasting Peace,” the draft was reviewed and refined by the IPU’s Peace and International Security Committee, incorporating over 36 proposals.
Central to the resolution is the assertion that sustainable peace must be anchored on justice, accountability, and national ownership of recovery efforts. It emphasizes that any peace process that sacrifices justice risks perpetuating cycles of conflict and undermining legitimacy.
The adoption is being viewed as a significant diplomatic milestone for Nigeria, reflecting the growing influence of African parliamentary voices in shaping global peace and security frameworks.
Reacting to the development, Kalu noted that the resolution would encourage parliaments across the IPU’s 155 member states to prioritize legislative actions that support peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and post-conflict recovery.
He also commended his co-rapporteurs for their collaboration during the drafting process and expressed appreciation to IPU members for their support in adopting the resolution.
Key provisions of the resolution call on parliaments to strengthen legal frameworks for accountability, support cooperation with international justice systems such as the International Criminal Court, and ensure inclusive, transparent, and nationally driven reconstruction processes.
The document further highlights the importance of addressing root causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation, while promoting transitional justice, reconciliation, and institutional reforms.

The resolution also urges lawmakers to integrate environmental sustainability into peacebuilding efforts and adopt people-centered approaches that prioritize human security and long-term resilience.
Analysts say the adoption marks a strategic step in reinforcing the role of legislatures in global peace efforts, positioning Nigeria as a key contributor to international policy discourse on conflict resolution and sustainable peacebuilding.
