The Government of Germany has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening defence cooperation with Nigeria, describing the country as a strategic anchor of stability in West Africa amid growing regional security challenges.
German Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Stefan Rossel, made the commendation on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, during a courtesy visit to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
The Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, disclosed this in a statement issued on November 4, 2026, noting that the Ambassador acknowledged Nigeria’s strategic contributions to promoting regional peace and security.
Rossel described Nigeria as a valued partner of the Federal Republic of Germany and reaffirmed his country’s commitment to protecting and deepening the longstanding bilateral relationship, particularly in defence and security.
He noted that sustained cooperation between both countries would create opportunities for mutually beneficial projects and initiatives.
The meeting also featured a briefing by the German Technical Advisory Group (G-TAG) on the progress and impact of its ongoing training support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), including efforts to strengthen military professionalism and operational capabilities.
In his response, General Oluyede expressed the appreciation of the Armed Forces to the German Government for its continued partnership and support towards building Nigeria’s military capacity.
He specifically acknowledged G-TAG’s contributions to the development of the Mechatronics School, Combat Tactical Care Training and Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices Training, alongside other capacity-building programmes and material support.
The CDS stressed the need to sustain and expand the existing defence partnership, particularly in specialised military training and professional development.
He called for increased opportunities for strategic and advanced military courses for officers and soldiers to strengthen their professional competencies and operational effectiveness.
