The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-ul-Adha celebration, underscoring the spiritual importance of the festival and calling for national reflection.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a press statement issued on May 25, 2026, and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
The declaration, according to the statement, reflects the Federal Government’s recognition and respect for the religious significance of Eid-ul-Adha among millions of Nigerian Muslims, who join the global Islamic community in commemorating the sacred festival.
Eid-ul-Adha, widely known as the Festival of Sacrifice, symbolizes obedience, faith, and compassion, drawing from the profound act of devotion demonstrated by Prophet Ibrahim. The government noted that these values remain critical to fostering unity and social harmony across the country.
The Minister extended warm felicitations to Muslim faithful both within Nigeria and in the diaspora, urging them to embrace the core teachings of the celebration.
He further called on all Nigerians, irrespective of religious affiliation, to use the holiday period for prayers and sober reflection, particularly as the nation continues to grapple with challenges related to peace, security, and economic stability.
“The Federal Government encourages citizens to seek divine guidance for the country’s progress and to promote values of unity, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence,” the statement read.
