The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists has celebrated the emergence of its Board of Trustees member, Comrade Ruth Abubakar, as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the Billiri East State Constituency seat in the Gombe State House of Assembly ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement signed by its National Secretary, Wasilah Ladan, the association described Abubakar’s emergence as a significant milestone for women in journalism and a broader victory for female participation in Nigeria’s political space.
National Chairperson of NAWOJ, Hajia Aisha Ibrahim, commended Abubakar’s resilience, dedication, and longstanding commitment to public service, noting that her success reflects the increasing recognition of competent women in governance and leadership roles.
“Our very own Ruth Abubakar has continued to distinguish herself as a woman of courage, vision, and capacity. Her emergence as the PDP candidate for Billiri East is a proud moment for the entire NAWOJ family,” Ibrahim said.
She expressed confidence that Abubakar would bring integrity, grassroots experience, and effective representation to the legislature if elected in 2027.
The association also applauded members of the NAWOJ Gombe State chapter for their solidarity and active support during the party primaries, describing their involvement as a demonstration of unity and commitment to advancing women’s causes.
Reports from the exercise indicated that NAWOJ members in Gombe were present in large numbers, contributing to the successful outcome of Abubakar’s candidacy.
