The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has distanced itself from a controversial joint statement reportedly issued with a Fulani group, clarifying that the statement originated from a separate organisation known as the Amalgamated Muslim Rights Concern (AMURIC).
In a press statement released on Saturday, MURIC said the clarification became necessary following public confusion over the similarity in names between the two groups.
According to the statement signed by Mallam Ibrahim Agunbiade, Secretary of MURIC, Oyo State Chapter, it was AMURIC—not MURIC—that collaborated with the Fulani group in issuing the statement on Friday, June 5, 2026.
“MURIC wishes to inform the general public that there is another Islamic group which bears a name very similar to ours. The group is called AMURIC. It was AMURIC that issued the statement in question, not MURIC,” the organisation said.
MURIC acknowledged AMURIC as a “sister Islamic organisation” comprising respected members but urged its leadership to adopt a more distinct name to avoid further confusion and misinformation.
The group noted that changing its own name would be difficult, having operated under the name MURIC since its establishment in 1994 and its registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
The organisation also expressed disagreement with aspects of AMURIC’s position, particularly the mention of prominent Yoruba leaders such as Chief Sunday Igboho, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.
“We do not see the need to bring the names of respected Yoruba leaders into the narrative,” the statement added.
Reaffirming its stance on security, MURIC emphasised that all ethnic groups in Nigeria, including the Yoruba, have the right to defend themselves against banditry and terrorism.

It further supported the role of both security agencies and community-based vigilante groups such as Amotekun, the Oduduwa People’s Congress (OPC), and Iru Ekun in tackling insecurity in affected regions.
“In conclusion, it was AMURIC that issued yesterday’s statement in connivance with a Fulani group, not MURIC, and we knew nothing about it,” the statement reiterated.
