As the race for the Adamawa State governorship gathers momentum ahead of the next electoral cycle, one name steadily gaining attention is Senator Aminu Iya Abbas, a lawmaker whose political journey reflects resilience, technocratic depth, and a reputation for institutional stability.
In less than two months, Senator Aminu Iya Abbas has dramatically altered his political trajectory, defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and securing his governorship nomination form within just eight weeks.
Born in June 1973 in Yola, Abbas’s early life was shaped in the grassroots communities of Adamawa. He attended Central Primary School in Uba, Hong Local Government Area, before advancing to Bayero University Kano, where he earned a degree in Accounting in 2000 and later a Master’s in Treasury Management in 2008. His academic grounding laid the foundation for a career defined by financial expertise and public accountability.
Before venturing fully into politics, Abbas built a strong professional résumé. He served during his National Youth Service Corps with Nigeria LNG Limited, and went on to work with Sigma Securities, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission as a forensic expert, and global consulting firm KPMG. A Chartered Accountant and Certified Fraud Examiner, Abbas brought a rare blend of technical competence into governance.
Political Rise and Legislative Influence
Abbas entered the political arena in 2011 when he was elected to represent the Uba/Gaya constituency in the Adamawa State House of Assembly. During his first stint, he quickly rose through the ranks, serving in multiple leadership roles including Chief Whip, Deputy Minority Leader, and Minority Leader, positions that sharpened his legislative acumen.
Although he lost his seat in 2015, Abbas demonstrated political resilience by staging a comeback in 2019. His return marked a turning point: he was elected Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, a role he held from 2019 to 2023.
Biggest Achievement: Stabilising Governance as Speaker
Abbas’s tenure as Speaker is widely regarded as his most defining political achievement. At a time when legislative, executive tensions often disrupt governance at the state level, he fostered a cooperative relationship with the executive arm, particularly under Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.
Under his leadership, the 7th Assembly was noted for:
Passing key development-driven bills that supported infrastructure expansion across the state
Promoting a stable legislative environment free from prolonged crises
Strengthening oversight functions using his background in forensic accounting
Facilitating policies that contributed to what many described as the “new Adamawa” development drive
His ability to combine political diplomacy with institutional discipline earned him a reputation as a stabiliser, an asset that now underpins his governorship ambition.
Transition to the Senate and Policy Advocacy
In 2023, Abbas expanded his political reach by contesting and winning the Adamawa Central senatorial seat, defeating former senator Abdul-Aziz Nyako. Now serving in the 10th Senate, he chairs the Senate Committee on Science and Technology.
His legislative footprint at the national level includes sponsoring motions and bills addressing critical issues such as:
Flood mitigation in Adamawa, including advocacy for the Dasin Hausa Dam to curb the overflow of River Benue
Reform of electricity billing practices for unmetered consumers
Establishment of key federal institutions, including educational and health facilities in Adamawa
Security enhancement through proposals like a military base in Hong LGA
One of his most notable interventions was his motion on recurring flood disasters linked to water releases from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam—an issue that has claimed lives and displaced communities across several local government areas.
The Governorship Ambition
With a blend of grassroots political experience, technocratic expertise, and legislative leadership, Abbas is positioning himself as a formidable contender in the Adamawa governorship race. His campaign narrative is expected to centre on continuity in development, institutional stability, and data-driven governance.
