The 8 Division of the Nigerian Army has strengthened its operational capacity with the graduation of 17 pioneer Armoured Combat Support Vehicle (CSK) crewmen, marking a significant step toward enhancing mobility and effectiveness in ongoing security operations.
The graduation ceremony, held at the 8 Division Training School, underscores the Division’s commitment to addressing evolving security challenges, particularly in the North West. The newly trained crewmen are expected to improve tactical manoeuvring and ensure the safe movement of frontline troops during operations.
Speaking at the event, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division and Commander, Sector 2 Joint Task Force (North West), Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, highlighted the strategic importance of CSK crewmen in modern warfare. He described them as critical assets whose skills provide a force-multiplying advantage on the battlefield.
“Anybody can fire a gun, but effectively engaging the enemy requires a crewman who can position the gunner for maximum advantage,” he said.
Koughna stressed the importance of both technical competence and the right mindset before entrusting personnel with high-value combat equipment. He also emphasised the role of continuous, on-the-job training in building capacity within units, noting that experienced personnel can transfer vital skills even outside formal training institutions.
The GOC further declared that specialised CSK training has become indispensable in counter-terrorism and anti-banditry operations. He charged the graduates to apply their skills effectively in the field and announced a special monthly allowance as motivation for their newly acquired expertise.
Earlier, the Course Coordinator, Lieutenant Colonel Edidion Okonnah, described the programme as a visionary initiative aimed at enhancing force protection and operational support across the Division’s Area of Responsibility.
He explained that the 17 trainees, drawn from various formations, underwent intensive theoretical and practical training. The curriculum covered military vehicle fundamentals, CSK components and capabilities, driving techniques, highway codes, vehicle inspection, tyre changing, and combat recovery.
According to him, the training concluded with a practical demonstration where participants showcased their proficiency in vehicle handling, precision driving, and tactical awareness.

The ceremony featured a live driving demonstration by the graduates and a group photograph session, marking the successful completion of the programme.
The initiative is expected to significantly enhance the Nigerian Army’s operational readiness in tackling insecurity across the region.
