AWKA, Anambra — The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Victor Umeh, has launched the second phase of his Agricultural Input Empowerment Programme, distributing fertilizers and modern farm equipment to farmers as part of efforts to tackle food insecurity and economic hardship.
The initiative, flagged off on Friday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Field in Ebenebe, Awka North Local Government Area, saw the distribution of 300 bags of 50kg fertilizer and over 20 multipurpose irrigation and spraying machines to beneficiaries drawn from agrarian communities across the district.
Speaking at the event, Umeh stressed the urgency of boosting local food production amid rising hunger and economic challenges in the country. He urged beneficiaries to make effective use of the inputs to improve yields and support food sufficiency.
“This programme is designed to empower our farmers with the necessary tools to increase productivity. With the current economic realities, agriculture remains a critical pathway to survival and prosperity,” he said.
The senator added that the empowerment exercise would be extended to other local government areas within the senatorial district, particularly those with strong agricultural potential.
The programme was executed in collaboration with Pinatech Engineering Nigeria Limited and Federal College of Agriculture Ishiagu, whose contributions Umeh commended as instrumental to the success of the initiative.
The event attracted key stakeholders, including the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Paulinus Ezeokafor, traditional rulers led by Nnaemeka Christopher Nnaegbuna, and community leaders.
In their remarks, community representatives praised Umeh’s leadership and commitment to grassroots development, citing his scholarship scheme, which has supported hundreds of students across the district, as well as his role in facilitating employment opportunities for constituents.
Bishop Ezeokafor lauded the senator’s continued support for the Church and his investment in education and human capital development, noting that such interventions have had a lasting impact on communities.

He also encouraged beneficiaries to utilize the distributed inputs effectively to achieve increased agricultural output, while offering prayers for continued success and guidance for the senator.
The agricultural empowerment programme forms part of Umeh’s broader constituency development agenda aimed at improving livelihoods, enhancing food security, and promoting sustainable economic growth in Anambra Central.
