Troops of Sector 1, Operation UDO KA, in collaboration with other security agencies, have foiled a suspected attack by members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) during an intelligence-led patrol in Imezi Owa community, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State on 6 May 2026.
According to the Nigerian Army, the operation—carried out under the framework of Operation UDO KA—was a follow-up mission targeting suspected terrorist collaborators in the area when troops came under fire while advancing on foot into the community.
Three personnel sustained injuries during the ambush, but the troops maintained operational superiority, repelled the attackers, and secured the general area. The wounded soldiers were promptly evacuated and are currently receiving treatment at a military medical facility.
During the ensuing exchange of fire, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) reportedly stockpiled inside the attackers’ hideout detonated, triggering a fire that destroyed the building used as their base of operations. Subsequent clearance operations uncovered additional IEDs, improvised hand grenades, and a shrine allegedly used for ritual activities. The structure was dismantled and destroyed to prevent further criminal exploitation.
One suspected collaborator was arrested during follow-up exploitation of the area. The suspect, along with recovered items, has been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force, Ezeagu Division, for further investigation.
A statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, reaffirmed the military’s commitment to ongoing security operations in the region.

The statement assured residents of Imezi Owa and surrounding communities that operations are being conducted with professionalism and respect for human rights, urging citizens to remain calm, avoid harbouring criminal elements, and cooperate with security agencies.
The Headquarters, Joint Task Force South East, Operation UDO KA, also warned members of IPOB/ESN and their sympathisers to desist from illegal activities, stressing that security forces remain determined to dismantle criminal networks and restore lasting peace across the South-East.
