Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have repelled a large-scale attack by ISWAP terrorists on Buni Gari in Yobe State, neutralising no fewer than 50 insurgents and recovering a cache of arms and ammunition.
The attack, which targeted the Headquarters 27 Brigade and a military checkpoint in the early hours of Thursday, was launched around 2:00 a.m. from multiple directions but was successfully foiled by troops after intense fighting.
According to a statement issued on Friday by the Media Information Officer of OPHK, Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, the insurgents attempted to overwhelm the troops by advancing from the western, southern, and south-western flanks in a coordinated assault.
However, the troops responded with superior firepower and tactical coordination, holding their positions and preventing any breach of the facility.
“The terrorists were met with devastating resistance and were forced to retreat in disarray, leaving behind casualties and equipment,” the statement said.
It added that at least 50 terrorists were neutralised during the encounter, with additional casualties reported along their withdrawal routes based on human intelligence.
The Air Component of OPHK also played a crucial role by providing Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR), as well as conducting precision airstrikes on identified terrorist positions and fleeing fighters.
Recovered items from the scene include eight AK-47 rifles, two General Purpose Machine Guns, two Rocket-Propelled Grenade tubes, five RPG bombs, ammunition, magazines, bandoliers, and improvised explosive device canisters.
Troops, supported by volunteer forces, have since launched follow-up operations to track down fleeing insurgents and prevent regrouping.
Despite the operational success, two soldiers were killed during the engagement, while some equipment, including Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles and gun trucks, sustained minor damage. Injured personnel are reported to be in stable condition and receiving treatment.

Operation HADIN KAI commended the bravery and sacrifice of the fallen soldiers, noting that the failed attack reflects increasing pressure on terrorist groups operating in the North East.
The military reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining operations aimed at eliminating insurgent threats and restoring lasting peace to the region.
