Troops of the Joint Task Force North West under Operation FANSAN YAMMA have launched a major offensive, code-named Operation CLEAN SWEEP III, targeting terrorist and bandit strongholds in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State and surrounding communities.
The operation, which commenced on June 14, 2026, follows the killing of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who was abducted alongside his wife by suspected terrorists. Military authorities say the offensive is aimed at tracking down those responsible, dismantling criminal networks, and restoring security in the affected areas.
According to a statement issued by the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Lieutenant Colonel Danja, troops have carried out aggressive fighting patrols, intelligence-driven raids, cordon-and-search operations, and clearance missions across identified hideouts within the Joint Operations Area.
Initial reports indicate significant gains in the Dikkawa Hills axis and nearby communities. Troops successfully cleared terrorist enclaves in Adua, Nasarawa, and Karaduwa, where several hideouts were discovered and destroyed. The military also dismantled logistics bases and other life-support structures used by the criminals, thereby weakening their operational capacity.
The operation is being conducted in collaboration with other security agencies and local stakeholders, whose support has been described as vital to ongoing efforts to improve security across the state.
The Theatre Command reassured residents of Matazu and neighbouring communities of the military’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, stressing that troops will continue to deny terrorists and bandits freedom of movement within the region.

Residents have been urged to provide credible and timely information to security agencies to aid ongoing operations, with assurances that all intelligence will be treated confidentially.
Military authorities say the offensive will be sustained until all operational objectives are achieved, with further updates to be provided as the mission progresses.
