In recent months, the National Library of Nigeria has faced a wave of coordinated media attacks, sensational publications, and sustained campaigns of calumny directed at the National Librarian/CEO, Prof. Chinwe Veronica Anunobi.
It must be clearly stated that allegations, petitions, and media reports do not constitute guilt. In a system governed by law and due process, claims must be properly investigated through lawful administrative mechanisms—not through media trials or reputational attacks.
Despite these controversies, the Federal Government recently renewed Prof. Anunobi’s appointment after reviewing her stewardship and recognizing ongoing reforms, including modernization efforts, digitization projects, and institutional continuity. This decision underscores official confidence in her leadership.
Following her reappointment, congratulatory messages and endorsements have continued from academic communities, library professionals, literacy advocates, and institutional partners within and outside Nigeria—reflecting broad recognition of her reform agenda and growing confidence in the institution’s direction.
Key Achievements Under Her Leadership
Under Prof. Anunobi, the National Library of Nigeria has recorded notable progress in several areas:
1. Digitization and Modernization of Services

On Institutional Resistance and Internal Dynamics
It is not unusual for reforms to generate resistance, especially within systems accustomed to older structures and informal practices. However, institutional disagreements should not be transformed into sustained media confrontations that risk undermining public confidence in a national knowledge institution.
The National Library of Nigeria is larger than internal disputes, union rivalry, or administrative disagreements. It serves a critical national role in education, literacy, and research, and must be protected from politicization and sensational narratives.

To the Federal Government:
Sustain support for reform-driven leadership, strengthen digital infrastructure, and ensure accountability through lawful institutional processes rather than media escalation.

Promote unity, professionalism, and collaboration to sustain ongoing reforms and institutional stability.

Engage through constructive and lawful channels, prioritize institutional interest, and avoid actions that could damage the image and credibility of the organization.
