The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has confirmed that a Nigerian national injured in a recent gas explosion in Qatar, Jubril Akorede Abdulrahman, has been discharged from hospital and is currently recuperating, bringing relief to anxious family members and observers back home.
The incident occurred late on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at the Barzan Gas Supply Facility in Ras Laffan, operated by Qatar Energy. According to Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the explosion happened at about 10:30 p.m. local time, triggering a fire that was swiftly contained by emergency response teams from Qatar Energy and the Qatar Civil Defence.
NiDCOM disclosed that Abdulrahman, who was among those affected, received prompt medical attention and has now been released from hospital care. He is currently recovering at accommodation provided by his employer.
The Commission commended Ambassador Yakubu for his rapid intervention and close monitoring of the situation, noting that his efforts ensured timely updates and appropriate support for the injured Nigerian.
At a press conference in Doha on June 22, Qatar Energy confirmed that the explosion was accidental and not linked to sabotage or hostile activity. The facility had only recently resumed operations following a planned shutdown that began in December 2025.
A total of 66 people sustained injuries in the incident, involving nationals from several countries, including Nigeria, Qatar, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, India, and Nepal. Authorities confirmed that none of the injuries were life-threatening.
NiDCOM Chairman/CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed relief at Abdulrahman’s recovery and extended sympathy to others still undergoing treatment.
“We are glad that Jubril Abdulrahman is recovering and in safe hands. Our prayers are with him and with everyone still receiving treatment,” she said.
She also urged Qatar Energy to continue providing adequate care and support for all affected workers throughout their recovery period.
