The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has commended the life imprisonment sentence handed down by a Canadian court to the individual convicted of killing two Nigerian youths in Vaughan, Ontario, describing it as a significant step toward justice and accountability.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the Commission praised the Ontario Court of Justice for sentencing the offender to life imprisonment with no possibility of parole for 25 years after being found guilty on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of unlawfully causing bodily harm.
The victims, Chibueze Momah and Tosin Amos-Arowoshegbe, were killed during a nightclub shooting on July 23, 2022. NiDCOM noted that while the ruling cannot undo the tragic loss or ease the pain of the families, it represents a measure of justice for the deceased and their loved ones.
Chibueze Momah, aged 22 at the time of his death, was described as a promising young graduate who had earned a diploma in Computer Programming and aspired to build a career in the technology sector. He was the only son of his family and had hoped to reunite with relatives in Canada.
Tosin Amos-Arowoshegbe, the second victim, was reportedly working as a security personnel at the time of the incident. Both men were remembered by family and associates as hardworking and ambitious individuals committed to creating better futures.
NiDCOM Chairman/CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, had earlier paid condolence visits to the bereaved families following the incident, expressing solidarity and offering prayers for strength during their period of grief.
The Commission commended the efforts of law enforcement agencies and judicial authorities involved in the investigation, extradition, prosecution, and conviction of the offender. It also acknowledged the resilience and patience demonstrated by the families throughout the legal proceedings.

Reaffirming its mandate, NiDCOM reiterated its commitment to protecting the welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora and advocating for justice whenever citizens become victims of crimes abroad.
The Commission extended its condolences to the Momah and Amos-Arowoshegbe families and prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased.
