The Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening diplomatic relations with the Holy See as it marked 50 years of bilateral ties alongside the first anniversary of the election of His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV.
Speaking at the commemorative recent event, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, described the dual celebration as a reflection of enduring partnership and shared values between both states.
She congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his first year as the head of the Catholic Church, praising his leadership for promoting peace, justice, dialogue, and human dignity across the world.
“His message of hope and solidarity resonates deeply at a time when humanity faces complex global challenges that demand greater understanding, reconciliation, and cooperation,” she said.
Highlighting the significance of the diplomatic relationship established in 1976, the minister noted that Nigeria and the Holy See have sustained a partnership rooted in peace, social justice, interfaith dialogue, and the promotion of the common good.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu acknowledged the contributions of the Catholic Church to Nigeria’s development, particularly in education, healthcare, and social welfare, noting that its interventions have impacted millions of Nigerians regardless of religion or ethnicity.
She further described the Holy See as a valued partner in advancing humanitarian causes and moral leadership globally.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities, the minister stressed the country’s commitment to peaceful coexistence, religious harmony, and sustainable development, adding that these align closely with the ideals upheld by the Holy See.

“As we mark this golden jubilee, we reaffirm our resolve to deepen collaboration in peacebuilding, humanitarian action, youth development, education, healthcare, and environmental stewardship,” she stated.
The minister expressed optimism that the relationship between Nigeria and the Holy See would continue to flourish, fostering global peace and mutual understanding for generations to come.
