The Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, has called for stronger collaboration between the police and young people as a strategic approach to tackling crime and misinformation in the country.
Jimoh made the appeal on Tuesday at the Political Intellectual Summit: Youth-Police Engagement Programme held at the Zone 2 Police Headquarters, Onikan, Lagos. The event was organised by the Lagos State Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement in collaboration with the Bureau of Public Defender (BPD).
He described youths as critical stakeholders in promoting peace, security, and sustainable development, noting that their active participation is essential to effective and modern policing.
According to the AIG, meaningful youth engagement aligns with global policing standards and is key to building trust, strengthening community cooperation, and improving public safety.
Jimoh emphasised that young people, as agents of change and future leaders, have a responsibility to counter misinformation, hate speech, and false narratives that could threaten national security.
He urged youths to support law enforcement agencies by providing credible information on criminal activities and maintaining constructive partnerships within their communities.
“The police have evolved beyond the slogan ‘Police is your friend’ to becoming genuine partners committed to protecting lives and property through community participation,” he said.
The AIG stressed that modern policing cannot succeed without public trust, active citizen involvement, and sustained engagement, particularly among young people.
“We are your friends and your partners. Do not be afraid to approach us. We are here to serve you and work with you in addressing security challenges,” he added.
Jimoh noted that policing should be anchored on respect for human rights, accountability, inclusiveness, and dialogue to strengthen public confidence.
He commended the Lagos State Government for fostering police-youth engagement through continuous dialogue and support for security agencies, adding that investments in security infrastructure and youth development have contributed to crime reduction in the state.
The AIG also praised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for providing operational support that has strengthened policing efforts in Lagos and neighbouring Ogun State.
He disclosed that the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Olatunji Disu, has directed police commanders nationwide to deepen community-oriented policing through youth engagement, mentorship, public enlightenment, and digital communication initiatives.
Jimoh assured that the police remain open to constructive criticism and dialogue aimed at improving service delivery.

He further urged youths to uphold the rule of law, reject criminal activities, and collaborate with the police, media, and other stakeholders to build a safer and more peaceful society.
The AIG expressed optimism that stronger collaboration between the police and the public would significantly enhance security and contribute to national development.
