The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has congratulated Nigeria’s first indigenous female neurosurgeon, Dr. Salamat Ahuoiza Aliu-Ibrahim, on her appointment as Medical Director of a children’s hospital in the United States, describing the feat as a milestone for Nigerians globally.
Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in a statement on Thursday, said the appointment underscores the exceptional contributions of Nigerians in the diaspora and reinforces the country’s reputation for excellence across professional fields.
She noted that Dr. Aliu-Ibrahim’s achievement sends a strong message that excellence transcends gender, race, and religion, adding that her success would inspire millions of young Nigerians, particularly girls aspiring to pursue careers in medicine and other demanding professions.
Dabiri-Erewa further highlighted the significance of the appointment for Muslim women, stressing that it challenges stereotypes and demonstrates that faith and professional excellence can coexist.
“Dr. Salamat Aliu-Ibrahim’s appointment is yet another reminder that Muslim women cover their hair, not their brains. Her remarkable achievement demonstrates that faith and excellence are not mutually exclusive,” she said.
While celebrating the development, the NiDCOM boss also expressed concern over the continued migration of skilled Nigerian healthcare professionals to foreign countries in search of better opportunities.
According to her, although Nigerians abroad continue to excel and contribute significantly to global development, the Federal Government is taking steps to address challenges within the domestic healthcare sector, including improving welfare, remuneration, and working conditions for medical personnel.
She added that creating a more enabling environment for healthcare workers would help curb brain drain and strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system for sustainable national development.

Dabiri-Erewa commended Dr. Aliu-Ibrahim for projecting a positive image of Nigeria through excellence and professionalism, and wished her continued success in her new role.
