ABUJA — The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Zubaida Umar, has intensified efforts to build grassroots resilience by engaging primary school pupils in disaster risk reduction awareness in Abuja.
Umar took the sensitisation campaign to pupils of LEA Primary School Durumi during an interactive visit aimed at promoting safety consciousness among children.
According to a statement issued on Friday by Manzo Ezekiel, Head of Press Unit at NEMA, the visit, held on April 30, 2026, forms part of the agency’s ongoing strategy to inculcate disaster preparedness among young Nigerians.
Addressing the pupils, the NEMA boss highlighted the importance of adopting basic safety habits and understanding simple measures to prevent disasters both at home and in school environments.
She educated the children on practical steps to reduce risks associated with common emergencies such as fire outbreaks, flooding, and unsafe play areas, urging them to remain vigilant and report potential hazards to responsible adults.
Umar stressed that disaster risk reduction is a collective responsibility that goes beyond emergency responders, noting that awareness, preparedness, and responsible behaviour at the community level are critical to preventing disasters.
She further explained that introducing safety education at an early stage is key to building resilient communities capable of responding effectively to emergencies.

The outreach, according to NEMA, underscores its broader commitment to expanding disaster risk reduction education beyond formal frameworks and embedding a culture of safety across schools, households, and communities nationwide.
