The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has expressed concern and pledged support to the family of the late former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Comrade Patrick Osadebamwen.
The assurance was conveyed on Monday when the Force Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Iniedu, representing the IGP, paid a condolence visit to the deceased’s residence in Bwari, Abuja.
Osadebamwen, a respected journalist and former NUJ FCT Council chairman, was reportedly found dead at his residence in Bwari on Saturday, a development that has continued to generate grief across the FCT media community.
Iniedu, who expressed shock over the journalist’s sudden death, conveyed the IGP’s condolences to the bereaved family and pledged the police leadership’s support, particularly for the children left behind by the deceased.
The condolence visit came after the NUJ FCT Council sought police assistance following the discovery of Osadebamwen’s remains. The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Sanusi, swiftly mobilised personnel from the Bwari Divisional Headquarters to assist in evacuating the remains from his residence to the mortuary.
The NUJ FCT Council, in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman and Secretary, Comrade Grace Ike and Comrade Jide Oyekunle, respectively, commended the FCT Commissioner of Police for his prompt response.
“The Council is using this medium to specially thank the FCT Commissioner of Police for the timely response when reached on Sunday,” the statement said.
The Council also appreciated the deceased’s friends, colleagues, associates and other well-wishers for their support to the family during the difficult period.
Ike described Osadebamwen’s death as a painful loss to the journalism profession, while commending the IGP and the FCT Commissioner of Police for identifying with the bereaved family and providing support following the incident.
Osadebamwen was widely respected among journalists as a committed unionist who contributed significantly to the activities of the NUJ and the development of the journalism profession.
His death has sent shock waves through the FCT media community, with tributes continuing to pour in from journalists, friends, colleagues and associates who have described him as dedicated to his profession and service to the union.
The NUJ FCT Council urged journalists, friends, colleagues and well-meaning Nigerians to continue to identify with the bereaved family and pray for the repose of Osadebamwen’s soul.

The Council said details of the burial arrangements would be announced after the arrival of the family’s representative in Abuja and the conclusion of necessary arrangements.
