The Independent Hajj Reporters (IHR), a faith-based civil society organisation, has appointed Jigawa State Governor, Mallam Umar Namadi, as its National Patron in recognition of his contributions to the Hajj industry and support for Nigerian pilgrims.
The appointment was announced by the National Coordinator of IHR, Ibrahim Muhammed, during the organisation’s Post-Hajj Lecture held at the National Mosque in Abuja.
Muhammed said the decision was informed by Namadi’s commitment to the welfare of Jigawa pilgrims and his efforts to protect the state’s Hajj allocation since assuming office.
> “We align ourselves with His Excellency because of his trademark commitment to providing assistance to Jigawa pilgrims since his assumption of office and his extraordinary interest in catering for the welfare of Nigerian Hajj pilgrims,” he said.
According to him, the appointment is also consistent with IHR’s mandate of advocating for the interests of Nigerian Hajj and Umrah pilgrims while educating intending pilgrims on the requirements and processes of pilgrimage.
Receiving the appointment plaque on behalf of the governor, the Director-General of the Jigawa State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Ahmed Labo, said Namadi accepted the responsibility and pledged to support the organisation in achieving its objectives.
Labo said the governor had, since the commencement of his administration, provided financial support to the state pilgrims’ board to safeguard Jigawa’s Hajj allocation.
He added that the state government sponsors Islamic scholars, medical personnel and support staff to assist pilgrims during the pilgrimage.
The DG further disclosed that the administration provides lunch for pilgrims and Sallah gifts aimed at cushioning the impact of the Basic Travel Allowance (BTA) on pilgrims.

“What we are witnessing today will energise all those involved and stimulate others to follow suit,” Labo said.
IHR said the appointment was intended to strengthen collaboration with stakeholders committed to improving the welfare, safety and overall pilgrimage experience of Nigerian Hajj and Umrah pilgrims.
