The House of Representatives has expresses concerned over the recent cholera outbreak as reported by the Lagos State Government, hospitalizing 60 persons and five deaths in the past few days.
This outbreak is part of a broader national concern, with Nigeria documenting 65 confirmed cases and 30 fatalities from January 1 to June 11, 2024, across 96 local governments in 30 states, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).
In a recent public health advisory, the NCDC highlighted the increasing trend of cholera cases nationwide, exacerbated by the escalating rainy season. To date this year, 1,141 suspected cases have been identified, with ten states contributing to 90 percent of these cases.
Chairman of the House Committee on Healthcare Services, Rep. Dennis Idahosa, emphasized the urgent need for coordinated action: “It is imperative that we respond promptly and decisively to address this cholera outbreak. The mobilization of resources and implementation of preventive measures are crucial in protecting our citizens.”
He added,
“Community involvement and education are pivotal in combatting the spread of cholera. We urge citizens to adhere to proper hygiene practices and report any suspected cases to health authorities. Ensuring access to clean drinking water, adequate sanitation and waste disposal, and promoting good hygiene practices, such as regular hand washing, are essential in cholera prevention.”
The House of Representatives applauds the NCDC for spearheading a multi-sectoral National Cholera Technical Working Group and offering vital assistance to the affected states.
Further, commended the Lagos State Government and other state administrations for their proactive disclosure and efforts to mitigate this public health crisis.
“Healthcare remains a paramount concern on the legislative agenda of the 10th Assembly House of Representatives. We are dedicated to improving the healthcare system and ensuring access to high-quality medical services for all Nigerians. The House will continue to advocate for robust public health measures and preventive strategies to address outbreaks like this.
“We offer our deepest sympathies to the families impacted by this outbreak and urge all Nigerians to remain vigilant.”
