The Lagos State Government has confirmed that a fire outbreak at Aswani Mechanic Village, off Osolo Way, Ajao Estate, Isolo, was swiftly contained by emergency responders, preventing the inferno from spreading to adjoining workshops.
The fire incident, which occurred on Sunday afternoon, was reported at about 12:26 p.m., prompting the immediate deployment of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Eagle Response Team from Cappa, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and LRU Fire.
According to LASEMA, the emergency teams arrived at the scene within 15 minutes and met a fire that had already gutted six shops within the mechanic village.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the fire may have been triggered by a power surge. However, no vehicles were affected, while no life was lost and no casualty was recorded.
All traders and artisans in the immediate vicinity were safely evacuated as responders worked to prevent the flames from spreading to other workshops and properties.
LASEMA said the fire had been subdued, while dampening-down and mop-up operations continued to prevent possible reignition and secure the affected area for safety and damage assessment.
The agency attributed the limited extent of the damage to the swift and coordinated intervention of the responding agencies.
The Lagos State Government commended the emergency responders for their professionalism, speed and inter-agency collaboration during the incident.
The government also urged operators of markets and workshops to comply with electrical safety standards, avoid overloading electrical circuits and ensure that fire extinguishers are properly installed and regularly serviced.
It further stressed the importance of compliance with safety regulations issued by the Lagos State Safety Commission to prevent similar incidents.
