The federal government of Nigeria has begun the induction of newly appointed Ambassadors and High Commissioners-designate, with a strong directive to prioritise result-oriented diplomacy that delivers tangible economic and national benefits for Nigeria.
The induction ceremony, which commenced on Monday in Abuja, is aimed at equipping the envoys with critical knowledge of Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities, diplomatic procedures, and consular responsibilities ahead of their postings.
Speaking at the event, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, urged the diplomats to serve as strategic representatives of Nigeria, noting that their actions would directly shape the country’s global image and influence bilateral and multilateral relations.
She emphasised that the current administration’s foreign policy is anchored on the “4Ds” — Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora — and tasked the envoys with advancing economic diplomacy by attracting foreign direct investment, boosting trade, and promoting tourism.
“The expectation is clear: diplomacy must translate into measurable outcomes that support Nigeria’s economic diversification and national development,” she said.
Delivering a keynote address on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, described the appointments as a “sacred national responsibility” and stressed that Nigeria’s foreign policy has been repositioned to place citizens at its core.
He charged the envoys to ensure their missions yield tangible benefits for Nigerians, enhance the country’s global standing, and protect its strategic interests.
The government also underscored the importance of efficient consular services, urging diplomats to remain responsive to Nigerians in the diaspora through prompt assistance, crisis management, and sustained engagement.
Lawmakers, represented by members of the National Assembly, pledged continued legislative support, particularly in strengthening oversight and funding for Nigeria’s foreign missions, while also stressing accountability and strict adherence to financial regulations.

The induction programme will continue with technical sessions covering diplomatic practice, mission administration, economic diplomacy, security coordination, and multilateral engagement.
The ceremony signals a renewed push by the Federal Government to reposition Nigeria’s diplomatic corps towards proactive, disciplined, and impact-driven service delivery on the global stage.
