Abuja, Nigeria – The proposed amendment to the Federal Medical Centres Act 2022, which seeks to establish the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Gembu, Taraba State, has been hailed as a historic step toward strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system, boosting economic development, and enhancing national security.
The bill’s sponsor, Senator Haruna Manu, emphasized that the establishment of FMC Gembu would save lives, reduce healthcare disparities, create employment opportunities, and position Gembu as a strategic healthcare hub for both Nigeria and the broader African subregion.
Speaking at a public hearing on the amendment in Abuja on Thursday, Senator Manu, who represents Taraba Central Senatorial Zone, underscored the bill’s significance in addressing healthcare gaps in the region. In a memorandum submitted in support of the amendment, he argued that the bill would provide a legal framework for the recognition, funding, and operationalization of FMC Gembu as part of the Federal Government’s commitment to equitable healthcare access.
Strategic Location and Cross-Border Healthcare Potential
Highlighting the necessity of the medical center, Senator Manu pointed out that Gembu, situated in the Mambilla Plateau, is a unique and strategically located town in Taraba State. Sharing a border with Cameroon, the area is home to a large and diverse population, many of whom lack access to a well-equipped healthcare facility.
“Due to its proximity to Cameroon, FMC Gembu should be equipped to handle cross-border healthcare collaborations in line with Nigeria’s ECOWAS health diplomacy efforts,” he stated.
Legislative Considerations and Recommendations
To ensure the successful implementation of the bill, Senator Manu proposed that the amendment should:
Mandate annual budgetary allocations for infrastructure development, staffing, and equipping FMC Gembu under the Federal Government’s healthcare expansion plan.
Encourage private sector participation through infrastructure development, medical equipment donations, and technology partnerships to ensure long-term sustainability.
Grant FMC Gembu administrative autonomy to enhance service delivery, facilitate competitive recruitment, and strengthen financial management within the Federal Medical Centres network.
The senator reiterated that the establishment of FMC Gembu would not only address critical healthcare needs but also foster economic growth by creating jobs and attracting investment in the healthcare sector.
