A Professor of Environmental Management at the Lagos State University, Isaiah Akoteyon, has urged the Federal Government and private investors to increase funding for renewable energy research and development to improve efficiency, energy storage and grid integration.
Akoteyon, who is the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, University of Lagos, made the call at the Society of Energy Administrators (SEA) of Nigeria’s 6th Annual Conference and Induction of Associate Members, 2026, in Lagos.
He stressed the need for increased investment in renewable energy technologies, noting that improved storage solutions and effective integration into the national grid were essential to advancing clean energy adoption.
The professor also called for stronger environmental policies and stricter regulations to limit emissions from fossil fuels, describing environmental considerations as a major component of energy standardisation.
He said governments and private investors should promote energy-efficient technologies while supporting public awareness campaigns to encourage energy conservation and reduce carbon emissions.
“Campaigns that educate consumers on reducing energy use and adopting energy-efficient practices in our everyday life will significantly reduce carbon emissions and overall energy consumption,” he said.
Akoteyon also identified improved energy access and cross-border energy integration as important measures for strengthening energy security and promoting sustainable development.
He expressed hope that the society would consider the recommendations in advancing energy administration and environmental sustainability.
The conference was themed, “Advancing Energy Process Environment Climate Adaptation Standardisation: Panacea for Climate Change and Sustainable Cities and Communities in Nigeria.”
Meanwhile, a Director of Oil and Gas in the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Sesan Odukoya, said the state government was ready to collaborate with the society to promote a cleaner environment in Lagos.
Odukoya, who represented the General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Dr Babatunde Ajayi, commended the society for its initiatives towards environmental protection in Nigeria and Lagos State.
Also speaking, the Chairman of SEA, Dr Diran Fawibe, commended the society’s management for its efforts in positioning the organisation to fulfil its mandate.
Fawibe said the society had worked tirelessly to strengthen its operations and promote effective energy administration.
Similarly, the Head of Electrical Laboratory at the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Ismaila Lawal, described the activities of SEA as significant and expressed the organisation’s willingness to support its initiatives.
Lawal urged the society to formally write to SON’s management to facilitate the organisation’s involvement in its activities.
Earlier, the President and Project Director of SEA, Dr Yekeen Adeboye, commended the Federal Government for the removal of electricity from the Exclusive Legislative List, describing it as a step towards strengthening energy security across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
Adeboye also commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for implementing energy transition and climate change policies, including initiatives promoting compressed natural gas (CNG), electric vehicles and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as cleaner household energy options.
He described SEA as a professional body for energy operations and compliance administrators, comprising the Energy Process Engineering Compliance Administrators (EPECA) and the Energy Compliance Administrators (EPMCA).
