Lagos, Nigeria — The College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL), on Tuesday inducted 94 medical professionals, comprising 79 medical doctors and 15 dental surgeons from the 2024/2025 academic session, charging them to uphold excellence and dedicate themselves to service in the healthcare sector.
The induction ceremony, held at the CMUL Complex in Idi-Araba, marked the graduates’ formal transition into clinical practice and public health, as they took the oath to join the medical and dental professions.
Speaking at the event, the Provost of CMUL, Prof. Ademola Oremosu, congratulated the newly inducted professionals, describing their graduation as the beginning of a lifelong commitment to humanity.
He said the institution had equipped the inductees with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to make meaningful contributions to healthcare delivery.
“We have laid a solid foundation for your career and instilled in you professionalism, courage, and character. Be good ambassadors of the College of Medicine and remember the values you have been taught, even when faced with challenges,” Oremosu said.
He urged the graduates to aspire to leadership, noting that their responsibilities extend beyond patient care to include teaching, mentoring, and advocacy.
“As medical and dental practitioners, you are also teachers, mentors, advocates, and role models. You must demonstrate empathy and provide holistic care to your patients,” he added.
Oremosu further highlighted ongoing challenges in the health sector, including communicable and non-communicable diseases such as malaria, HIV/AIDS, Ebola, hypertension, and diabetes, calling on the new doctors to play active roles in improving health outcomes in Nigeria.
Delivering the induction lecture, Prof. Azeez Butali of the University of Iowa, United States, urged the graduates to uphold professionalism, resilience, empathy, and integrity in their careers.
He emphasised the importance of mentorship, gratitude, and financial discipline, encouraging them to remain focused despite challenges.
“The journey to success is not a lonely one. Always remain grateful to those who made sacrifices for your success,” Butali said, noting that mentorship played a critical role in his own career development.
Also speaking, the Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Prof. Fatima Kyari, who administered the oath, outlined the ethical standards guiding the profession.
She described medicine as a rewarding career and advised the inductees to remain humble, maintain patient confidentiality—even after death—and adhere strictly to professional regulations, including the housemanship programme.
In her goodwill message, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development Services, Prof. Afolabi Lesi, commended the graduating class for their academic achievements, particularly their record of medical publications.

She urged the new doctors to remain committed to excellence and continuous learning, noting that graduation marked the beginning of another phase of growth and service.
The ceremony also featured the presentation of awards to top-performing graduates and was attended by healthcare professionals, academics, family members, and well-wishers who gathered to celebrate the new inductees.
