Wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, has described child labour as a grave crime against humanity, conscience and faith, urging renewed commitment from stakeholders to protect children from all forms of exploitation.
Soludo, who is also the Founder of the Healthy Living Initiative, made the assertion in a message commemorating the 2026 World Day Against Child Labour, observed annually on June 12.
The global observance, themed “Red Card to Child Labour: Fair Play for Children, Decent Work for Adults,” seeks to raise awareness and galvanise action toward eliminating child labour worldwide.
She stressed that every child deserves the freedom to learn, dream, and grow in a safe and nurturing environment, free from exploitation and harmful responsibilities.
“Child labour is not just a crime against humanity; it is a crime against conscience and faith,” she said.
Soludo lamented that many children are still burdened with responsibilities that deprive them of their childhood, education, health, and future opportunities.
She called on governments, communities, families, and relevant stakeholders to intensify efforts in safeguarding the rights, dignity, and welfare of children.
According to her, addressing the root causes of child labour—such as poverty, cultural practices, and limited access to education—remains critical to ending the menace.
“As we observe the World Day Against Child Labour, let us renew our collective commitment to protecting the rights, dignity and welfare of every child.

“We must continue to create opportunities that allow our children to thrive while addressing the social, cultural and economic challenges that expose them to exploitation,” she added.
Soludo reaffirmed her commitment through the Healthy Living Initiative to advancing programmes and advocacy efforts that promote the wellbeing, education, and overall development of children across Anambra State.
