The Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has reaffirmed the National Assembly’s unwavering commitment to legislative oversight, describing it as a cornerstone of democratic governance.
Speaking at the 7th Annual Senator Abiola Ajimobi Roundtable and the 75th posthumous birthday celebration of the late Oyo State Governor, held on Monday at the University of Ibadan, Senator Jibrin emphasized the importance of oversight in ensuring accountability, transparency, and effective use of public funds.
The roundtable, organized by the Senator Abiola Ajimobi Foundation (SAAF) in collaboration with the Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies at the University of Ibadan, featured the theme: “Legislative Oversight in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospects.”
“The role of legislative oversight in a democratic society cannot be overstated. It is the foundation of democratic governance, ensuring accountability, transparency, and the essential checks and balances necessary for the effective utilization of public funds,” Senator Jibrin stated.
As the government’s watchdog, he explained, the legislature holds the executive accountable, ensuring that the interests of the people are upheld. Through oversight functions, the legislature investigates government activities, evaluates policies, and monitors the implementation of programs for which funds have been appropriated.
Reflecting on the challenges and opportunities of legislative oversight, the Deputy Senate President assured Nigerians of the 10th Assembly’s commitment to its duties, inviting constructive criticism to improve its performance.
Commending the SAAF for sustaining the legacy of the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi, he described the topic of legislative oversight as timely, providing a platform for national reflection on the legislature’s role in shaping the country’s destiny.
On National Assembly Library Dedication
Senator Jibrin also addressed the decision to name the National Assembly Library after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He
highlighted Tinubu’s unique history as a former senator and Nigeria’s first president with such a legislative background, noting that his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, had also served in the National Assembly.

“This marks a historic moment, and we felt it appropriate to honor President Tinubu by naming the library after him in recognition of his contributions and legislative roots,” he explained.
Oversight on Refineries and Infrastructure
Discussing the National Assembly’s oversight on refineries, he noted the Assembly’s active monitoring of funds appropriated for refinery operations.
“As we speak, the Port Harcourt Refinery has resumed operations, and the Warri Refinery will soon follow. Those doubting this are welcome to visit and confirm the progress,” Senator Jibrin said. He also praised the Dangote Refinery as a milestone project, adding that the legislature had visited and assessed its facilities prior to its commencement.
Addressing Power Supply Challenges
On the nation’s power supply issues, Senator Jibrin described the challenge as a work in progress. He acknowledged the efforts of past administrations and reiterated the current government’s commitment to solving the issue.
“The government has devised strategic measures to address the challenges of power supply, which are critical for stimulating the economy. It’s a gradual process, but progress is being made,” he assured.
