Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing what he described as a worsening and “toxic” political environment in the country.
The announcement was conveyed in a statement issued on Sunday by his spokesperson, Valentine Obienyem, and made available to PREMIUM TIMES.
In the statement, Obi expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s political climate, which he said is increasingly characterised by intimidation, insecurity, and persistent scrutiny of individuals committed to public service. He lamented that institutions meant to safeguard citizens are now often deployed against them, creating an atmosphere hostile to genuine reform efforts.
The former presidential candidate clarified that his decision to leave the ADC was not driven by personal disagreements with party leaders, including former Senate President David Mark and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, both of whom he said he holds in high regard.
Rather, Obi pointed to deepening internal divisions, recurring legal disputes, and what he described as the infiltration of destabilising forces within the party—issues he noted were reminiscent of challenges he faced during his time in the Labour Party.
He further decried what he termed a troubling societal shift, where values such as integrity, humility, and due process are often misconstrued as weakness. According to him, sincere efforts aimed at nation-building are increasingly undermined by suspicion, exclusion, and political manoeuvring driven more by control than service.

Despite his exit, Obi reaffirmed his commitment to Nigeria’s development, stressing that his focus remains on addressing critical issues such as insecurity, poverty, and displacement.
He emphasised that his political ambition is not rooted in the pursuit of office, but in his desire to see a just, compassionate, and functional society.
