The Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) has commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for securing the conviction of former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Nwabuoku, describing it as a major milestone in Nigeria’s anti-corruption campaign.
In a statement issued over the weekend and signed by its Chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju, the civil society organisation praised the EFCC for its persistence in prosecuting high-profile corruption cases. It noted that the conviction sends a clear signal that no public official is above the law, while also exposing the role of civil servants in facilitating corruption involving political actors.
HEDA said the successful prosecution of Nwabuoku strengthens public confidence in Nigeria’s justice system and highlights the need for sustained institutional commitment to accountability and transparency in public financial management. The group also commended the judiciary for supporting the EFCC in ensuring the timely conclusion of the case.
However, the organisation called on the EFCC to intensify efforts toward the speedy prosecution of former Accountant-General, Ahmed Idris, describing the case as a critical test of Nigeria’s anti-corruption resolve.
“The allegations against Ahmed Idris involve massive public fund misappropriation, and ensuring a timely and transparent trial is essential to demonstrate that the anti-corruption war is not selective,” Suraju said.

HEDA further urged the judiciary to prioritise corruption cases, particularly those involving senior public officials, warning that delays could erode public trust and weaken the deterrent impact of anti-corruption enforcement.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to supporting anti-corruption agencies and promoting accountability, transparency, and good governance across Nigeria.
