Consensus, Not Conflict, Strengthens APC — Abdullahi Ganduje Defends Party’s Candidate Selection Process

If there’s consensus and affirmation, it is equally the same as an election because it reduces friction, former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, said on Tuesday at the National Assembly Complex, underscoring the party’s preference for consensus in managing internal contests.
Former APC National Chairman, Ganduje, has strongly defended the use of consensus in the party’s internal electoral processes, describing it as a strategic tool for maintaining unity and preventing internal crises.
Speaking at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, Adamu explained that consensus-building, followed by affirmation, serves as a practical alternative to competitive primaries, especially in a large political party like the APC.
According to him, the process helps to significantly reduce tension, eliminate unnecessary rivalry, and curb the risk of anti-party activities that often arise from contentious primaries.
“Consensus has two stages — agreement and affirmation — and when both are achieved, it delivers the same legitimacy as an election,” he said.
Ganduje emphasized that the approach is designed to promote harmony within the party and ensure that members remain aligned with its broader political objectives.
He also linked the stability within the APC to the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the current administration has created a conducive political atmosphere that encourages cooperation and inclusiveness.

The former chairman further highlighted ongoing efforts to integrate new members joining the party from other political platforms, stressing that unity at all levels — from the grassroots to the national leadership — remains a top priority.
Ganduje remarks signal the APC’s continued reliance on consensus politics as it prepares for future electoral cycles, with party leaders seeking to balance internal democracy with cohesion and strategic alignment.
