Former Kano LG Chairmen, Grassroots Stakeholders Adopt Barau as APC’s Sole Governorship Choice for 2027

Former local government chairmen in Kano State have unanimously adopted the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) sole candidate for the 2027 governorship election, citing his performance, legislative influence and grassroots appeal as key factors behind their decision.

The former council chairmen, who served between 2019 and 2022 during the administration of Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, made the declaration on Wednesday during a courtesy visit to Senator Barau at the National Assembly, Abuja.

A formal motion to adopt Barau as the party’s consensus candidate was moved by the former chairman of Rimin Gado Local Government Area, Barrister Dahiru Mannir Maigari, and seconded by the former chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State, Hon. Baffa Mohammed Takai. The motion was subsequently put to a voice vote by the former chairman of Madobi LGA, Alhaji Mohammed Yahaya, and was unanimously approved.

Two members of the Kano State House of Assembly — Hon. Zubairu Hamza Masu (Sumaila) and Hon. Garba Yau Gwarmai (Tsanyawa/Ghari) — were present to witness the endorsement.

A statement signed by Senator Barau’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Malam Ismail Mudashir, revealed that the former chairmen appealed to the Deputy Senate President to formally declare for the governorship race as soon as possible.

Former chairman of Gwale LGA, Alhaji Khalid Ishak Diso, said Kano residents, especially at the grassroots level, were eagerly awaiting Barau’s declaration.

“Kano people are waiting for you to declare. We have called on you before and you are yet to. The people are anxiously waiting for your declaration. Please answer the call to serve,” Diso said.

Also speaking, Hon. Baffa Mohammed Takai said the group was throwing its full support behind Barau in view of his “outstanding achievements in parliament” and “immense contributions to the development of Kano State.”

“We are 100 per cent with you. By the grace of Allah, you will be the next governor of Kano State on May 29, 2027. You have the capacity to address the challenges facing our state,” Takai stated.

In his response, Senator Barau thanked the former council chairmen for their confidence in him, describing them as key grassroots leaders whose role in mobilising communities is critical to any meaningful development.

“It is true that Kano used to be second only to Lagos in commerce and development. Sadly, today we are trailing behind due to a lack of quality leadership. This is a reality we must confront honestly and work together to change,” he said.

He assured them that, with collective effort and God’s grace, Kano could be restored to its former glory, adding that he remained committed to truth, accountability and people-oriented leadership.

Stakeholders from Tsanyawa, Ghari also endorse Barau

In a similar development, stakeholders from Tsanyawa and Ghari local government areas of the state also declared their support for Senator Barau’s governorship ambition during a separate visit on Wednesday.

The motion for endorsement was moved by Hon. Garba Yau Gwarmai of the Kano State House of Assembly and seconded by Hon. Aminu Yakanawa, drawing a thunderous ovation from over 100 stakeholders in attendance.

Yakanawa assured Barau of the total backing of the people of the two local government areas.

“By the grace of Allah, you are the next governor of Kano State. Our people are solidly behind you and we will work tirelessly for your success,” he said.

Responding to concerns over security challenges in Tsanyawa and neighbouring Shanono LGA, Barau said active efforts were ongoing to address the situation.

“We are not leaving any stone unturned. Necessary steps have been taken to restore peace. It is not everything we announce on the radio, but be assured that serious work is ongoing,” he stated.

The endorsements further strengthen growing indications that Senator Barau is emerging as a key political force within the APC in Kano ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial election.
