The Nigeria Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation and advancing a United Nations system capable of delivering meaningful outcomes for all nations.
The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, made this known during an interview with journalists in his office on Tuesday, Sept. 22, ahead of Nigeria’s participation in the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) in New York, United States.
Enikanolaiye said Nigeria was ready to engage the international community in advancing a multilateral system that promotes global peace, security, equity and sustainable development.
He said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remained committed to sustaining Nigeria’s strategic positioning in the international community through meaningful and constructive partnerships in line with the country’s foreign policy objectives.
The minister said President Tinubu had mandated Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the High-Level General Debate of the 81st UNGA, scheduled for Sept. 22 to 28, 2026.
The session is being held under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
According to him, the Nigerian delegation comprises ministers and senior government officials who will present the country’s positions on issues of global and national significance while participating in key high-level events on the sidelines of the General Assembly.
Enikanolaiye said Nigeria would participate in several strategic engagements, including the Extraordinary Meeting of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC) and the 3rd Africa Minerals Strategy Group High-Level meeting.
He added that the engagements would provide opportunities for Nigeria to contribute to discussions on issues affecting Africa and the wider international community.
